The Archer County Courthouse was built in Archer City, Texas, its county seat.
In 1858 the Texas legislature named the city for Branch Tanner Archer, a commissioner for the Republic of Texas, who served as Commissioner to the United States, Speaker of the House of the Republic of Texas House of Representatives, and Secretary of War of the Republic of Texas.
Part of the 320,000-deeded-acre La Escalera Ranch is located in Archer County. It is known for its herd of Black Angus cattle and its abundant wildlife.
Archer County is one of the most productive areas of dairy product production in Texas. The two southeastern Archer County cities of Scotland and Windthorst have 37 functioning dairy farms.
Archer County is heavily Republican, and has voted for the presidential candidate of that party in every election since 1980
Kichais defeated the Texas Rangers in the battle of Stone Houses in southeastern Archer County in 1837, and Kiowas led by Kicking Bird defeated United States cavalrymen led by Capt. Curwen B. McLellan in the battle of the Little Wichita River in the northwestern part of the county in 1870.
