There’s Something Odd About the Historic Leon County Courtroom

When you see it…

I had the opportunity to visit the Leon County Courthouse in Centerville, Texas during November 2021.  The courthouse was built in 1886, making it one of the oldest functioning courthouses in Texas.

The restored district courtroom was locked when I arrived, but I convinced a courthouse employee to let me in. I was glad I did! What a treat!

In 2007, the courtroom was beautifully restored to its 1909 condition. It has 20 foot ceilings and smells of aged and varnished wood — walnut to be exact.

Although I was captivated with the beauty, I immediately sensed that something was amiss.

How many times did you need to watch the video above to notice that there are 2 jury boxes and 2 witness stands???  One of each is situated on either side of the Judge’s bench!

Can you guess why?  I’ll bet you can’t, and will admit that I couldn’t either.  Once I learned, I was really impressed and totally “nerded out” on this one!  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
