Architect: A.O. Watson.

Year Built: 1890-1892.

The Milam County Courthouse is located in Cameron, Texas. It is designed in the Renaissance Revival style with matching facades, respectively, omni the east/west facing sides and the north/south facing sides.

Architect A.O. Watson also designed two of my favorite courthouses: De Witt County and Llano County.

The clock tower and Lady Justice were added after construction and then removed for several decades. They were replaced during the THC restoration in (rededicated July 4, 2002).

Milam County was created in 1834 as a municipality in Mexico  and organized as a Texas county in 1837. Milam County has fabulous history and is named for Benjamin Rush Milam, an early settler and a leader in the early phases of the Texas Revolution.

“Old Ben Milam” is one of my favorite Texans, and was killed by a sniper in my hometown of San Antonio.  He is buried in San Antonio’s Milam Park.

From the Courthouse Historical Plaque:

“Milam County Courthouse. This is the fourth structure to serve as the Milam County Courthouse. The local Masonic Lodge laid the cornerstone for the building on July 4, 1891. Designed by architect A.O. Watson of Austin, the courthouse at one time feature a second empire roof and a cupola with a four-sided clock. The clock was removed and the roof altered in a 1938 renovation project by the Federal Works Progress Administration. As the center of county government for over a century, the courthouse stands as a significant part of Milam County history.”
