The Borden County Courthouse was built in Gail, Texas

In 1876 Borden County was broken off from Bosque County. The county was named after Gail Borden Jr, who was known for creating condensed milk. In 1837, Borden was a Justice of the Peace in Colorado County. Borden started out as a printer in Galveston. Then he was a surveyor in the Austin Colony who also laid out the site of the City of Houston and prepared the first topographical map of Texas. Borden also published newspapers, was an organizer of the Republic of Texas.

Mushaway Peak is a butte located near the city of Gail in Borden County, Texas. Rising  2851 ft, he peak is one of the regions prominent landmarks. Mushaway Peak is what remains of what was a much larger “palisaded” plains in geographical terms. The sediments underneath the butte have resisted erosion.
