The Hardin County Courthouse is located in Kountze, Texas.

Hardin County is in the East Texas Timberlands region known as the Big Thicket of Southeast Texas. Bears and cougars are occasionally seen in the forests of this area. Hardin County was originally named “Sour Lake Springs”, because of the sulphurous spring water that flowed into a nearby lake. A two acre pond known as Medicine Lake, attracted East Texas Indians to the area and to what they believed were healing powers from the mud and water of the lake.
