Irion County Courthouse (Mertzon)

star

Architect: David S. Castle Company.

Year Built: 1937.

The current Irion County Courthouse is located in Mertzon, Texas. Mertzon has been the County Seat since an election in 1936 moved the seat there.

This unimpressive edifice is the second Courthouse to serve Irion County. The first courthouse was built in 1900 and stands just a couple of miles away in the ghost town of Sherwood. The 1900 “old” Irion County courthouse was designed by Martin & Moodie and has much more character than this one.

David Sharon Castle designed several public buildings and courthouses in the central/west central part of Texas, including the following:

  • Borden County Courthouse
  • Mitchell County Courthouse
  • Reagan County Courthouse
  • Stephens County Courthouse
  • Sterling County Courthouse
  • Upton County Courthouse
  • Winkler County Courthouse
